The feast of the Baptism of the Lord in Orthodoxy is one of the 12 most important during the year - it closes the Christmas season. Following the Divine Liturgy, people follow the priest in a procession with the cross to the nearest body of water. At the end of the ceremony the priest blesses the waters. People symbolically dip their heads three times, believing that in this way they wash away their sins.
